Day 448: doors

Day 448:

The trees here are often so tall and wide that I can saw boards quickly and cleanly and end up with solid wood doors that need very little reinforcement.

It’s good, because, well, good doors in this place mean the difference between being able to sleep soundly and being spider chow.

I spent the day sawing logs into doors and making wrought iron hinges so that I can continue to make things safe around here. I twas cold and rainy but that doesn’t matter much when it comes to sawing wood, because I have plenty of chambers where if I get sawdust all over the place nothing’s hurt.

Making hand saws has gotten easier as my tools have progressed, but it’s still a good day’s worth of work.

The rain let up this afternoon so I took a little while to fish. Didn’t catch anything notable but also didn’t get sunburnt and it was a nice way to relax.

Day 447: Almost connected

Day 447:

I have to admit I was really hoping there’d be a cache of, well, anything in these rocks that I’m removing between chambers, but nope, rock, rock, and more rock.

Rock is boring, heavy, and boring.

I’m going to bed.

Day 446: Connecting things

Day 446:

Technical the stairwell I’m digging is connected to other chambers by definition, because otherwise why would I need stairs?

But I noticed on my map that it’s actually not too far away from two other chambers on this same floor, so it occurred to me that connecting it would be kind of handy.

Of course, it occurred to me to do this after I had already finished out the walls.

But hey, progress.

Day 445: Underground trees?

Day 445:

I had to go all the way back to my home base to get some wood today.

I’m seriously considering trying to grow some trees indoors, underground.

I mean, there’s some wood near the entrance that I have at this end of the caverns, but chopping it down here means putting myself at risk of outdoor monsters, who are more difficult to spot and predict than, say, indoor monsters.

I haven’t decided if I want to go the route of building a skylight or see if I can grow them using torchlight… everything grows really fast here so I imagine I’ll have results pretty quickly whichever way I go if I’m successful… but back home simple firelight didn’t have the right wavelengths in it to help plants grow and I don’t know if it will here or not.

I’m mulling the possibilities.

Day 444: Stairwells

Day 444:

One of the challenges of digging haphazardly as one tends to do when one is addicted to ore and doesn’t have a good scan of the region is that one loses track of what one’s already done.

Which is to say that while digging out the chamber I’m in, looking for diamonds, I’ve accidentally dug directly above one of my other chambers.

Now there are pretty good chances that if there was any good ore in this space, I’ve already gotten it, because it’s rare that ore is nice enough to stay in the dimensions of my chambers

On the other hand, pockets of diamonds tend to be small, so there’s also a good chance that there’s something valuable hiding in here.

I think I’m going to continue to take my chances and dig it out, even if it means that I look back in a few days and realize I’m not getting closer to my socks.
