Day 444: Stairwells

Day 444:

One of the challenges of digging haphazardly as one tends to do when one is addicted to ore and doesn’t have a good scan of the region is that one loses track of what one’s already done.

Which is to say that while digging out the chamber I’m in, looking for diamonds, I’ve accidentally dug directly above one of my other chambers.

Now there are pretty good chances that if there was any good ore in this space, I’ve already gotten it, because it’s rare that ore is nice enough to stay in the dimensions of my chambers

On the other hand, pockets of diamonds tend to be small, so there’s also a good chance that there’s something valuable hiding in here.

I think I’m going to continue to take my chances and dig it out, even if it means that I look back in a few days and realize I’m not getting closer to my socks.

Day 443: sleeping well

Day 443:

I found a spot in my caverns where it’s almost silent. No zombies growling,  no skeletons rattling, no gelatinous cubes splatting.

I set up a bed there and sometimes when I don’t make it all the way back to my normal home I sleep there.

The first few times it took a little getting used to. Even when you’re exhausted, even when you’ve done everything to bar the doors and protect yourself, it can be hard to sleep in a new place. I think that’s just part of being human, because it happened to me even way back as a kid when we’d stay in a hotel or something. But living surrounded by monstrous creatures certainly makes it clear why we evolved this way.

Now I’ve adjusted and gained confidence and I sleep better here than anywhere I’ve ever slept in my life.

And if it wasn’t like 10 floors underground I’d sleep here all the time.

Anyway, tired, and the torch is burning low. Going to sleep now.

Day 442: Diamonds and Goo

Day 442:

The good news: I found more diamonds, setting me closer to my goal. (Also making me feel really good about digging here, and not doing a whole lot to keep me from just mining here for a while. So much for goals.)

The bad news: the gelatinous lime cubes or whatever they are seem to be getting bolder – I killed a small one climbing on one of my trunks today. Don’t really need the neighbors deciding my stuff is theirs.

So, some good, some bad, I’m still alive, and as soon as I get back to my home base I am taking such a bath.

Day 441: Surprise! Gelatinous Cube of Death!

Day 441:

How the heck did a giant gelatinous cube of death make it into the cavern I’ve been mining?!?

It’s huuuuuge, almost to the ceiling, loud, squishy, and as far as I can tell, unable to climb steps!

I dispatched it, as the old-timers used to say about the cave rats, but I’m baffled. And annoyed. And really in need of a bath to remove this slime.

Day 440: surprise! diamonds!

Day 440:

Today was kind of miserable for the most part – running back and forth to make sure I have the supplies I need, listening to zombies pound on the doors trying to get in, killing a small slime that somehow got in.

And then, diamonds!

Not a lot, only like 8 chunks, but that’s still more than I expected to find all the way up here!

So all that digging and ore-gathering is getting me closer to my socks!
