Day 731:

Having dug up to almost below my house to extract some very nice granite, I’ve dug back down toward the core, still looking for diamonds. Nothing yet, except I found another of those amazingly big holes / chasms / etc.

Actually, it’s probably the same chasm, since it runs the same east-west direction as most of my  mining caverns.

Anyway, I’m at the top of it and there’s no safe way to go down into the chasm without rope or ladders or something that I don’t have in enough quantities to make it safe.

And a spotter. It would be really nice if just once I had a spotter here that wasn’t shooting at me or yelling groans at me in a tone that implied the impending removal of my limbs.

As far as caving goes, this place is sub-par in short.

Although since nothing here appears to poop, at least I haven’t had to remove a single piece of guano yet, and that’s… actually a really big positive now that I think about it.

Day 730:

Like I said yesterday, I dug as far as the shafts in this area went down and then started to mine… and then i hit a slab of valuable granite ore and started to follow it back up the shaft.

I know, I know, i have enough granite to destabilize the gravity of this planetesimal, much less the granite market, but at least now I know which boxes it’s in instead of having to dig for it.

Anyway, I’m now only two floors below my “house” but I’m digging up good stuff.  So I’m thinking it’s a win even if it isn’t diamond.

Were the captain here, I’m sure there’d be some disagreement.

Day 729: Digging

I’m back to digging. I decided that since my current goal is diamonds I’d dig straight down from where I am near the main part of my ranch area, so that I wouldn’t have to go so far.

This is apparently a decision that I neglected previously because I’ve already uncovered two sets of stairs that I build previously to go straight down from here and both led to solid rock.

Which… I mean… at least it’s not monsters?

But it’s not ore or diamonds either and if my other maps are correct I have a heck of a lot of mining to do to get deep enough to dig out diamonds. Would have been handy have it done already.

Day 728:

Usually when I fish this part of the river, I get very few salmon and a lot of crappies. Today and yesterday were both all about the salmon. Do we have seasons? Is it salmon spawning season? Who knows?

It was not boot spawning season today, though I did snag a large sheet of leather.

Looking at my supplies, I think I’d better see if I can mine some more diamonds before I make my way back to that mountain. That is truly a mountain of rock, and it’s going to take something a bit stronger than iron ore to make a good map of the area and clear a path around the space.

So I’m packing up for the deep tonight to see what I can find. I’ve been aboveground for a long time, so this feels good.

Day 727:

Almost drove myself to tears with how sublimely calm and quiet it was on the river today. Caught a mess of fish, including some salmon and what looks like a clown fish. (Makes no sense: clown fish are tropical saltwater fish and believe you me this water is not tropical.)

I also caught a pair of boots, further cementing my belief that there used to be a boot warehouse on this site.
