Day 589: shot!

Day 589:

One of those murderers shot me! I climbed up the high hills to the south to figure out how to lure the cows off before I got hit with one, and instead, I got shot!

The bolt pierced my leather jerkin, but only just… it looks like I need to start wearing the diamond-studded stuff when I go out to do chores until I’m sure these jerks are gone.

They are, in a word, annoying.

Okay, the more accurate word would be deadly, but if I let myself get wrapped up in the fear of the situation then I’m as good as dead. As Twylia put it in the great holiday tradition, Hogfather, don’t get afraid, get angry.

And I am angry. This was a really good jerkin! And there’s no way for me to patch a hole this big, much less get the blood out.

Day 588: anxiety

Day 588:

The murderers haven’t found me yet, but they’re definitely still in the area. As close as I can figure, they’re mad about the ones I killed… which, I mean, yeah. Even professional murderers get pissed when their allies are killed.

(Do professional murderers make friends, do you suppose?)

Anyway, I’m making progress with the things I want to do, but much more nervously, as I’m afraid any minute now a pack of roving iron-masked murderers are going to come around the corner and decide to end me.

It’s as bad as when I first landed, to be honest. I’ve learned a lot about how to survive the local fauna here, but this is a new situation altogether and definitely not a comfortable one.

What if the whole planet is hostile toward me? Except for invisible llama breeders I mean. What if they’re hostile toward me because I was nice to the invisible llama breeder?

I miss wine.

Day 587: Murderers have returned

Day 587:

Another of these roving gangs of murderers has cut through and I had to take three of them out with my bow.

One of them dropped  a crossbow. It’s in pretty rough shape, but gives me some ideas about how I might be able to build my own in the future.

Tonight, though, nervous sleep as I hope they can’t find my home, and if they can, they can’t figure out a way in.

Day 586: broken axe

Day 586:

Spent most of my day making a new axe because the diamond one I made ages ago finally bit the dust.

This new diamond axe is really light and really sharp, so I’m cutting trees down twice as fast as before. That’s pretty awesome, and also concerning, because it means I really have to be careful not to axe my own limbs off. Because there’s an incredible shortage of hospitals here and those murderers don’t look like they’d help.

Day 585: More murderers!

Day 585:

Did some mining and worked on figuring out where I’ll plant trees.

It’s become a bit more of a strategic question now that I’ve seen yet another band of murderers on the horizon. They didn’t see me, but they were clearly dressed the same, and armed to the teeth.

I’d prefer they don’t see me, if nobody minds.

Anyway, planting trees now needs to become about providing myself cover and adequate site lines simultaneously — or about designating places as “no go, just trees”, so that the trees grow back but I don’t try to live there.

This whole “be kind to the place you live” thing gets harder when the place you live is consistently trying to kill you.
